Frequently Asked Questions

What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a health care profession that treats, diagnoses and helps prevent disorders and conditions related to the nervous system, spine and musculoskeletal system. Chiropractic is most often used to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to: arm and leg joint pain, neck pain, back pain, and headaches. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are trained to recommend rehabilitative and therapeutic exercises, as well as to provide dietary, nutritional, and lifestyle counseling.

Is chiropractic effective?

Over time, structural misalignments and postural imbalances accumulate in our bodies. Chiropractic care helps to correct these by restoring your inborn ability to heal and be healthy. In order for your body to remain in good health, your nervous system must function well. This means your nervous system must be free of interference. Chiropractic adjustments help restore nerve function, and remove nerve interference caused by misaligned vertebrae, which restores your nervous system to optimal function and improves your health.

What does a chiropractor do?

Chiropractic physicians practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care. Chiropractic adjustments are the most common therapeutic procedure performed by chiropractors. Adjustments help restore mobility, circulation in the region of a joint, neural integrity, and improve soft tissue flexibility. Chiropractors also utilize other therapeutic procedures, such as exercise, ultrasound, muscle stimulation, soft tissues technique, and nutrition to name a few.

What is a chiropractic adjustment? Is it safe?

A chiropractic adjustment is a very specific, high velocity, low amplitude force put into the spine to return vertebrae to optimal position. The force can be applied either by use of an adjusting instrument, with a specialized drop table technique, or by hand.

Chiropractors focus on using the body's natural ability to heal itself without the use of drugs and surgery. As a whole, chiropractic care has an excellent safety record. Our chiropractors are trained to appropriately diagnose and treat a number of neuromusculoskeletal conditions.

Does a chiropractic adjustment hurt?

Typically, an adjustment does not hurt. You may occasionally experience stiffness and soreness much like the day after you start a new exercise program. Usually applying ice to the sore area relieves discomfort.

What is a subluxation?

A subluxation is when vertebrae moves out of its normal position or becomes misaligned. Subluxations are caused by an array of issues ranging from minor slips and bumps to something more serious like a car accident or sudden trauma. When a vertebrae is subluxated, it begins to put pressure on blood vessels, nerves, and everything around it. This pressure compromises neural integrity and may influence organ system function and general health.

What can I expect from my visit to a chiropractor?

Going to see a chiropractor is a new experience for many patients. Sometimes you are recommended through a friend or have done research online. Maybe you are fed up with living with pain and are taking steps to do something about it. In either case, your first visit to the chiropractor should be about getting to know your physician and discussing your current condition, health history and goals.

What results can I expect from treatment?

If you've ever played a sport, fallen down, been in a car accident, or just bumped into something too hard, it's possible you are not functioning at your best due to a misalignment. There are many potential structural or mechanical causes for misalignment, as well as chemical reasons. For instance, if you drink excessively or smoke, or even just maintain a poor diet, the chemical issues in your body can eventually cause underlying issues and disease to appear.

The goal of chiropractic care is to remove both postural and structural imbalances in an effort to allow the body to heal itself. For this to happen, signals from your brain must be able to flow freely down your spinal cord and through your network of nerves. Chiropractors have the skill and ability to correct misalignments and interruptions, which allows the body to perform as it is meant to.

Visiting a chiropractor can help you get back on track both structurally and chemically, and bring your body back to its proper state and peak performance.
